Bird Song
Feb. 21, 1971
Capitol Theater

An intimate very early Bird Song - Quartet-styled, which serves this song really well. Also: you can hear the thinking, especially between guitars.

Tennessee Jed

Paramount Northwest Theater

Ho-Hum: Another outstanding 1972 TJ. This gem from the sorta overlooked summer tour. Garcia aces the break, natch. Band - unconscious. Whew! at end.

Candyman
June 21, 1976
Tower Theater

From Garcia's cheeky intro on, this graceful cabochon throws a faint, warm light. 1976 elegance w/a sick, raw spider web guitar break.

Wharf Rat
March 21, 1985
Hampton Coliseum

First show - I didn't know this gem very well & after this criss-crossy version, I was hooked. Dark & murky.

Loser
July 21, 1972
Paramount Northwest Theater

Download Series - An intimate, casual living room Loser. Garcia coming out of the guitar break is divine. Not the actor.

Caution
Nov. 10, 1967
Shrine Auditorium

Scorched earth Caution. Please keep your extremities inside the car at all times! American Primitive, but high sophistication is developing in parallel.
Playin' In The Band
Dec. 14, 1971
Hill Auditorium

Thanks darkstar67! This whole show is worthy of numerous re-visits. Which is my basic plan.
Playin' In The Band
Dec. 14, 1971
Hill Auditorium

I love what Playin' became in '72-'73, but this is a great clue. You can hear the excitement when they decide to take it out beyond the usual just a little bit. A version that shines a light on its future potential.
Playin' In The Band
July 22, 1972
Paramount Northwest Theatre

Nice tip. Sweet, orderly, clean-as-a-bean Playin' - they pack a lot of good stuff into a tidy package.
Cumberland Blues
Sept. 27, 1972
Stanley Theatre

Love the transition from Dark Star, but even without that, this version stands up as an all-timer. Just killer all the way through. And I agree w/darkstar67 re the Merriweather '85 Shakedown.
