Candyman
July 12, 1976
Orpheum Theater

Spare, almost vulnerable take on this classic. Godchaux brings the church and Garcia brings the stained glass. An American beauty.

You can hear the swagger in their mutterings before they play. And the performance bears that out. Sure, smooth, and effortless.

Letter perfect - the Godchauxs take this to a loftier level. Beautiful dynamic push-and-pull by the whole group.

Dreamy, motionless rendition on a sea of individual human reactions [audience tape]. A wonderful time for this gem.

A lovely wandering version - then things get psychedelic and pastorale @8min.
Not Fade Away
Sept. 19, 1970
Fillmore East

One of my all-time favorites. Really, everything in this show is Limited Edition Premium with all of the options. Love it! If this show doesn't do it for you, the Grateful Dead will probably never do it for you.
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
Oct. 19, 1981
Sports Palace

From the opening flag, this one has juice to spare. A big Garcia show. So much sunny energy and Garcia's singing is top flight. I feel like I've just been let in on a secret. One of the great 80s S>Fs I've ever heard. And I was at 7-1-85. [Looks down at the floor in mock modesty]

You can't really lay Candyman down any better than this dream of a rendition. [I just saluted]

Man-O! Hearing this for the first time and can't believe I'm hearing t [you know . . .] Everyone is completely on top of his or her game in this delightful smoked sable on pumpernickel. Beautiful stereo articulation of the guitars makes them sound like they're steering us through some kind of waterway. But cleaner.
