Godchaux leads a version that seethes with the excitement of a new song.

Garcia's snap-crackly Strat leads the way, but don't sleep on Godchaux - how thrilling it must have been for the Dead to hear how he framed their sound.

Stately and statuesque cough syrup special, but really intense like a cough syrup statue. Irving H. Thalberg Lifetime Achievement Award for the bass sound. Envelope please? April 1971! April 1971, Ladies and Gentlemen. A tree will be planted in Israel in the name April 1971.
Dark Star
May 24, 1970
Hollywood Music Festival

Almost triumphant out-of-the-gates then the guitars collide and explode at about 3:45 and, yeah, we're only 4 minutes in - after that, I might slightly dispute Carrion_Crow: I think this thing goes pretty deep into different dimensions and galaxies. 1970 Dark Stars might be the peak. Consistently crazy shit. And I picture them doing this on a big festival stage in the middle of the day - and it further boggles the goggles.
