Tennessee Jed

County Coliseum

If possible, a very contemplative TJ. Everyone's in apex '73 form, esp. Godchaux who's mixed fairly high to good effect.

St. Stephen

Capitol Theater

Of the heavenly 1970 Capitol Theater St. Stephens. Just a beautiful union between audience and group. Killer Stephen! CRUNCH!

Here Comes Sunshine

War Memorial

Show opener - the perseverence is what really sells me on this one. A struggle, but a worthy one b/c the spoils are lush. Sneaky great.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
May 18, 1972
Kongressaal, Deutsches Museum

Crazy overlooked: A noble, splendiferous C>R in full Europe 72-ness. Patient, exploratory, charming. Driving a distance? Pack this.

Bird Song
Feb. 21, 1971
Capitol Theater

An intimate very early Bird Song - Quartet-styled, which serves this song really well. Also: you can hear the thinking, especially between guitars.

Terrapin Station

Winterland Arena

One of the sweet ones - at a sketchy time in his life, Garcia is razor sharp and moved emotionally. Lots of dynamics.
St. Stephen
Nov. 2, 1969
Family Dog at the Great Highway

Nothing to be afraid of here. Perhaps not top echelon 1969 St. Stephen, but as you listen further and deeper, it stands tall. Me: not sneezing.
Estimated Prophet
April 25, 1977
Capitol Theater

"*the* emblem of '77 perfection" - exactly.
Dark Star
Nov. 2, 1969
Family Dog at the Great Highway

Sharp & feisty at the outset. You almost wonder if they'll ever actually take that step back, listen, and find the intimate conversation. Then @ about 6.45, Garcia lightens his touch and TC begins to dictate. Percussion is woody and spare. Really unlike anything else at any other time for them. Or, I guess, anyone. Oh - and the sound is splendiferous on No. 43. Fabbo. Oh and another thing: you can hear 1970 in the near distance.
Eyes Of The World
Sept. 3, 1977
Raceway Park

Kreutzmann is liquid - with a tight snare. There are times, such as this, where the '77 model Eyes is among the most beautiful music these folks ever played. Grammarwise: does that work?
