Loser

The Spectrum

Heavens! It took a Dave's Picks to get this on the board! Soft, seductive, dark, and pretty much perfectly realized. Guitar break: shit yeah.

Estimated Prophet
Dec. 29, 1977
Winterland Arena

Bold, sharp, confident version with plenty of 1977 squoosh. This version has that great '77 restraint with Garcia speaking in MuTron tongues.

Brown Eyed Women

Kiel Auditorium

Attention. To. Detail. - ESP Weir. Not the world's greatest recording, but the band is bubbly & effortless.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

Yale Bowl, Yale University

Listened to this on a big PA outside over the summer and it's so alive, athletic, and filled with beautiful instrumental cross-talk. Improv!

Sugaree
June 4, 1976
Paramount Theatre

Another example of how Sugaree thrived in 6/76: Garcia's sweet, mellow, bubbly silver thread guitar and group dynamics both jaunty & subtle. Primo.

Eyes Of The World
May 22, 1977
The Sportatorium

Not really surprising that an Eyes at this particular point in time would be dreamy & iconic. Garcia is in top pointillistic form - the push and pull of aggressive and receptive. I also love that these guys could play a full arena and just let Garcia do a lengthy and beautiful soliloquy.
St. Stephen
March 20, 1977
Winterland Arena

Dave says "radical explorations" - which is true.
Lost Sailor -> Saint of Circumstance
Nov. 24, 1979
Golden Hall, Community Concourse

Probably oughta have more support. Very dynamic, controlled Lost Sailor. Rhythm section - strong. Joy and swagger to be found herein.
Althea
May 1, 1981
Hampton Coliseum

A perfect version. Garcia's vocals are superb!
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
April 22, 1977
The Spectrum

Light touch from the drummers - interesting between times Scarlet. Then when things stretch out, the rubber meets the road. Or when the rubber meets the road, things stretch out. And get a little weird. And a spirited Fire.
