Bertha
Feb. 21, 1971
Capitol Theater
Warp speed, precise, slightly unhinged, and driving into the greenish-blue evening.

Jack Straw
Oct. 30, 1971
Taft Auditorium
Godchaux leads a version that seethes with the excitement of a new song.

Brown Eyed Women
May 20, 1973
U.C.
A giggly, slangy Garcia masterpiece (in sweet show sauce). Goes down EZ.

Mexicali Blues
Feb. 28, 1973
Salt Palace
So good you can practically see the border town.

Me and My Uncle
Nov. 17, 1971
Albuquerque Civic Auditorium
Two things: (1) the middle of a searing Other One > MAMU > Other One fest and (2) Garcia loses his mind (or mine) at the end of the solo.

Mexicali Blues
Nov. 14, 1971
Texas Christian University
A little rough around the edges, but I really like this one. Weir in particular plays like he's plugged directly into the wall. Springy, sharp. Like electricity.
Don't Ease Me In
Nov. 23, 1973
County Coliseum
Rarely listen to this song, but this is pretty slick version - '73 Smoothness. But it kicks a little too. Sounds like I'm talking about BBQ sauce. Sorry. Really.
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
May 25, 1972
Strand Lyceum
No one like Garcia. In China Cat, he spins out lead lines so inside out and complex I'm not sure where I live.
Comes A Time
May 23, 1972
Strand Lyceum
Lovely version!
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
May 8, 1977
Barton Hall - Cornell University
Can't we believe this is possibly the best ever S>F and not worship at some kind of shrine? I was at 7/1/1985 - a great show and one of my favorite S>Fs, but no comparison. The drums alone are a huge difference. Lesh's bass lost most of its texture by the early 80s. Just no comparison.
