Tennessee Jed

If possible, a very contemplative TJ. Everyone's in apex '73 form, esp. Godchaux who's mixed fairly high to good effect.

Of the heavenly 1970 Capitol Theater St. Stephens. Just a beautiful union between audience and group. Killer Stephen! CRUNCH!

Here Comes Sunshine

Show opener - the perseverence is what really sells me on this one. A struggle, but a worthy one b/c the spoils are lush. Sneaky great.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

Kongressaal, Deutsches Museum
Crazy overlooked: A noble, splendiferous C>R in full Europe 72-ness. Patient, exploratory, charming. Driving a distance? Pack this.

Bird Song
Feb. 21, 1971
Capitol Theater
An intimate very early Bird Song - Quartet-styled, which serves this song really well. Also: you can hear the thinking, especially between guitars.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
March 21, 1973
Utica Memorial Auditorium
Don't be misled by Weir's confusion at the beginning, this C>R has it all: guitar crazy, swings like a motherfucker. Kreutzmann is Hartless & free - just kickin' the door down. Top tier drumming. Slightly disappointing that they're fully ensconced by this point in the leprechaun promenade during the transition, but that shouldn't scare any true C>R fan off.

They seem to relish playing this. Or something about relish. Top tier pantry goods.
Sugaree
Dec. 10, 1971
Fox Theatre
Perfect example of the peak interaction at this time. Weir is insane. Garcia is Garcia. This is going to be one hell of a digital release.
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
May 3, 1972
Olympia Theater
Bounce bounce bounce. This one has the perfect countenance. As someone else said, this is the China>Rider on which I cut my teeth. From Garcia in spiraling form to the guitar interplay to Kreutzmann's lickety-split snare fills. Never sleep on that guy. Addictive.
Mister Charlie
March 26, 1972
Academy of Music
The group deftly weaves in and out of the beat in the middle of the guitar break. It would fuck up a lesser group. Good strange energy.
