Bird Song
Feb. 21, 1971
Capitol Theater

An intimate very early Bird Song - Quartet-styled, which serves this song really well. Also: you can hear the thinking, especially between guitars.

Tennessee Jed

Ho-Hum: Another outstanding 1972 TJ. This gem from the sorta overlooked summer tour. Garcia aces the break, natch. Band - unconscious. Whew! at end.

Candyman
June 21, 1976
Tower Theater

From Garcia's cheeky intro on, this graceful cabochon throws a faint, warm light. 1976 elegance w/a sick, raw spider web guitar break.

Wharf Rat
March 21, 1985
Hampton Coliseum

First show - I didn't know this gem very well & after this criss-crossy version, I was hooked. Dark & murky.

Loser
July 21, 1972
Paramount Northwest Theater

Download Series - An intimate, casual living room Loser. Garcia coming out of the guitar break is divine. Not the actor.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Dec. 6, 1973
Public Hall

Takes a little while ramp up, but when it does, hoofa!
Wharf Rat
June 17, 1976
Capitol Theater

A tell: Garcia's entrance is sinewy, complex, and in the fucking zone. Easy to see this unfolding into an ace Wharf Rat. The bridge is completely unique the way Garcia warps space. I can't think of too many superior versions of this chestnut.
Bird Song
Sept. 17, 1972
Baltimore Civic Center

One of my favorites. Smooth and exploratory.
Wharf Rat
Dec. 2, 1973
Music Hall

And a second set opener to boot! Crazy. An all-time Wharf Rat.
Weather Report Suite
Nov. 30, 1973
Boston Music Hall

Such a feathery touch on the WR - Lesh brings the chocolate tree. Great 2 guitar massage.
