Smooth with wicked edges in all the right places!

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

Overlooked, patient little gemerald.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

This one is the sound of a band that knows it can do pretty much anything. Smooth and fiery.

Dark Star
April 12, 1969
Student Union Ballroom, U. Utah

Garcia muscles his way through the early part of some with some amazing earthy compressed electric guitar. Garcia leads them into hairpin turns, murk, drama, etc ... The group attacks relentlessly - wave after wave.
Wharf Rat
May 25, 1977
The Mosque

An absolutely beautiful, intimate, one-of-a-kind opener into a double scoop of Garcia acrobatics. Top of his game. They all pretty much are. It comes as no shock that the Wharf Rat itself is First Rate Blue Ribbon Class. Chef's kiss.
The Other One
May 25, 1977
The Mosque

A big, graceful Beast. Garcia's a bottomless well of ideas, nearly hydroplaning. One of the things I love most about this period of Dead is their ability to get nearly perfectly quiet. Sets up a conversation. May '77 Other Ones - due more recog. This is a great advertisement. Complex and daring.
Help On The Way > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower
June 17, 1976
Capitol Theater

Authoritative out of the gate. Drummers laying in the groove. June 1976 is a prime spot for so many of my favorite songs. Swingin' exploratory Slipknot! with some Garcia Travis Bean speechifyin'.
Not Fade Away
Sept. 20, 1970
Fillmore East

Only overlooked due to the night before's behemoth. A very enjoyable renewing of acquaintances.
