Heavens! It took a Dave's Picks to get this on the board! Soft, seductive, dark, and pretty much perfectly realized. Guitar break: shit yeah.

Estimated Prophet

Bold, sharp, confident version with plenty of 1977 squoosh. This version has that great '77 restraint with Garcia speaking in MuTron tongues.

Brown Eyed Women

Attention. To. Detail. - ESP Weir. Not the world's greatest recording, but the band is bubbly & effortless.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
July 31, 1971
Yale Bowl, Yale University
Listened to this on a big PA outside over the summer and it's so alive, athletic, and filled with beautiful instrumental cross-talk. Improv!

Playin' In The Band
April 22, 1977
The Spectrum
Another argument for the underratedness of Spring 77 Playins. Like nothing else - Godchaux's fuming synths, Garcia taking the whole shebang elsewhere entirely. Always worth the re-visit. Insane version.
Estimated Prophet
April 25, 1977
Capitol Theater
Fresh as a daisy! This Estimated happens at an interesting sweet spot: after the true feeling-out period of the West Coast shows and before the pure mastery of next month. So ... educational. And dynamic! Coda: Garcia attacks with a majestic wink. Classic Travis Bean -> envelope. On the short side, but full of ideas and conceits.
Eyes Of The World
Oct. 15, 1976
Shrine Auditorium
High Octane! Declarative! Slippery transition into Music - beautifully and thoughtfully done.
The Other One
May 29, 1971
Winterland Arena
And a joy to listen to not at work! Spectacular. Epic.
Dark Star
Feb. 11, 1969
Fillmore East
I don't know that I hear Veneta as overrated jazz fusion at all, but I admit '69-'70 is where it's at for me with Dark Star. What a sweet, velvety opening. Immediately into the lazy mastery of a '69 Dark Star. @7:30 Mr. TC starts tripping out. Mainly a 1970 man here, but 1969 has some of TC's best work. Got to give it that. No need to single anyone out - everyone's outta sight. Like Veneta, group in peak form.
