Heavens! It took a Dave's Picks to get this on the board! Soft, seductive, dark, and pretty much perfectly realized. Guitar break: shit yeah.

Estimated Prophet

Winterland Arena

Bold, sharp, confident version with plenty of 1977 squoosh. This version has that great '77 restraint with Garcia speaking in MuTron tongues.

Brown Eyed Women

Kiel Auditorium

Attention. To. Detail. - ESP Weir. Not the world's greatest recording, but the band is bubbly & effortless.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

Yale Bowl, Yale University

Listened to this on a big PA outside over the summer and it's so alive, athletic, and filled with beautiful instrumental cross-talk. Improv!

I am not indifferent about this song at all! I think it's genius - practically a standard. And early '73 is a beautiful time for TJs. As are '71, '72, the rest of '73, '74, '76, '77, '78.

This one cooks. And a newly-liberated Kreutzmann gleefully leads the charge.
Dark Star
April 8, 1972
Wembley Empire Pool

Out of the gates, this Dark Star is a towering achievement. Best of E72 b/c in 32 "short" minutes it goes everywhere and never runs out of steam. All of the players are in constant INVENT mode - a long, optimistic conversation about past, present, future. These first two E72 shows demonstrate just how ready for the tour these guys were. And how excited they were to be there.

Quiet, conversational. Could easily be a practice in a garage. Or a living room. Very much has its own thing. Garcia's break underlines how EXP this version was/is. Coalesces into an explosive end. This could be a go to. Oh yeah - sick show.
The Other One
July 18, 1976
Orpheum Theater

Back for another inhale - this is a gorgeous Other One. Garcia's going for max tunefulness. Never bad. That.
