Bird Song
Feb. 21, 1971
Capitol Theater

An intimate very early Bird Song - Quartet-styled, which serves this song really well. Also: you can hear the thinking, especially between guitars.

Ho-Hum: Another outstanding 1972 TJ. This gem from the sorta overlooked summer tour. Garcia aces the break, natch. Band - unconscious. Whew! at end.

From Garcia's cheeky intro on, this graceful cabochon throws a faint, warm light. 1976 elegance w/a sick, raw spider web guitar break.

First show - I didn't know this gem very well & after this criss-crossy version, I was hooked. Dark & murky.

Loser

Paramount Northwest Theater

Download Series - An intimate, casual living room Loser. Garcia coming out of the guitar break is divine. Not the actor.

A First Class ride all the way! A jolt from the start, but the emergency EVAC @6:45-7:28 is mind-numbing. Then Garcia follows with some smoky salamander guitar lines. + These 4 shows are so magnificent, it's hard to single out moments, but this has to be a highlight. Thanks to Garcia, TC, & Co. , this is a dizzying, awe-inspiring work of improv art. Balanced, evolutionary, and filled with crazy and mundane stories. Mesmerizing.

Love this 11! Heavier and a little more jazzbo than usual, which is more of a headrush. It's very easy to glide in the lux-O-craft for this rendition, but you can also follow the crazy Garcia & Lesh dodges and weaves - as virtuostic and soulful as any self-respecting 11. And Garcia at around 3:15 or so levitates. And he does so with simple ease.

Super in-control and smoldering. Not that this song can ever be considered laid-back, but this is kind of laid-back. Had it become so easy for them they could (just) ride a cloud of chariots? I wish we could draw or add pix to these comments. Y'know, break on through. Saying.

Supersonic grooves. Garcia pushing it as always.

Starts with some beautiful, panting feedback. Peak shit - Fall 1972. How do you think it's going to go? Fully realized group dynamics - perfect blend of listening and attacking. Patience/urgency. Yin/Yang? Top-of-the-line Garcia Strat spelunking - complete command. Whole group - in charge, dynamics and the ideas keep coming up. I typed kleep, but autotune (or whatever it is) corrected me. Did it ever occur to you, Autotune - if that is your name (I has me doubts) - that perhaps I wanted to say kleep and then you brought all of your emotional baggage in, which only served to prolong the explanation period? Frustrated here. So hard to find good people.
