A cozy little delight - hand percussion, contemplation, great stereo drums, and some rip roaring riffage. Comes in under the radar, but worth a visit.

Sugaree

Capitol Theatre

As much as I love May 77 Sugarees, Spring 76 is where it's at for me. Subtlety, separation, and Garcia's whispery, silver-dipped guitar breaks.

Candyman

Veterans Memorial Auditorium

1978: Prime weather for Candyman. This performance, like many from then, highlights the bleak world of the narrator. Garcia's break: spidery.

Bubbly, bratty storyboard version. Character & twang for miles. I'd pay to see this band. Two for a tenner? Four please.

Terrapin Station

Capitol Theatre

This is a very sweet Terrapin. Everyone's fired up to play it. All you need to do is watch the vid to see the pure joy this brings Garcia. Memorable.

The Other One
Nov. 17, 1971
Albuquerque Civic Auditorium

Definitely one of my favorites. So many microstories in this one. What a great time - Godchaux settling in, leaning heavily on his Impulse! collection. A lot of really personal conversations mixed up with searing, intense stuff. Woof! Woof! Woof! and Woof! (that's Brad saying Wolf! Wolf! Wolf! and Wolf!) And the transition into MAMU is just silly. Great great show.
Here Comes Sunshine

Listened again to this running today. It's a fucking classic! It may not be as exploratory as later that year, but there's so much great stuff to devour here. Among other things, Kreutzmann's floor tom sounds a lot like Jaki Liebezeit of CAN. Wicked.
Dancin' in the Streets

Tower Theatre

Hoppin' version - definitely the audience is an MVP. But the band is in such fine fettle, it's not hard to imagine this swinging inside an empty hangar.

Agree w/CuddlyBear: this is a great show. A serious groove is laid down at this point in the evening.
Playin' In The Band
Sept. 21, 1973
The Spectrum

Mainly cuz of Kreutzmann, this Camaro goes from smooth to gooey and smooth to intense without a thought. Garcia digs in. A really ace show - I so often forget about this tour (to the extent I really forget 1973 shows) and it's really very unique. They flirt with jazz and avant garde very nakedly. It's bold and exciting stuff. Light/Heavy.
