Candyman
July 12, 1976
Orpheum Theater

Spare, almost vulnerable take on this classic. Godchaux brings the church and Garcia brings the stained glass. An American beauty.

You can hear the swagger in their mutterings before they play. And the performance bears that out. Sure, smooth, and effortless.

It Must Have Been The Roses

Letter perfect - the Godchauxs take this to a loftier level. Beautiful dynamic push-and-pull by the whole group.

Planting the Flag of Civilization on this tight scorcher. New from factory - Inspector #9. Under penalty of law, this tag may not be YEAH GARCIA!

Dreamy, motionless rendition on a sea of individual human reactions [audience tape]. A wonderful time for this gem.

Tennessee Jed
Sept. 15, 1972
Boston Music Hall

Always have had a soft spot for Jed - it's an American standard. And Garcia nearly does something miraculous. As here. Garcia's guitar break more than makes up for the cruel verse 2 cut. High wire stuff. And FEROCIOUS.
New Potato Caboose
Nov. 11, 1967
Shrine Auditorium

What a slow burn killer! Garcia's vocabulary was probably expanding by the set - he's got his voice well in hand by this point. Of course, Lesh has some truly dominating moments.
They Love Each Other
March 28, 1973
Civic Center

In the luxurious DP-16 sits this little pearl. Kreutzmann mans flight control and Garcia rides the rocket. S(l)ick Stratocaster playing.
He's Gone
May 25, 1977
The Mosque

I can't believe this is such a rarity on this tour - I mean, it's perfectly designed for the floating mist of time they were at this stage. And wow it swings! I could see this version landing higher, although there are some giants in front of it.
Scarlet Begonias
Aug. 4, 1974
Philadelphia Civic Center

Revisiting this old haunt. This one just barrels! This is well-oiled madness! MADNESS! The breakdown is soooo sweet.
