Me and My Uncle
Nov. 17, 1971
Albuquerque Civic Auditorium

Two things: (1) the middle of a searing Other One > MAMU > Other One fest and (2) Garcia loses his mind (or mine) at the end of the solo.

Lately I think of Port Chester. Fab 4 Alignment. Limber. Ambidextrous.

St. Stephen
Dec. 29, 1969
Boston Tea Party

The peak is like a merry-go-round spinning out of and back into control and then, albeit briefly, out and in of control again.

He's Gone
April 17, 1972
Tivolis Koncertsal

This one has the righteous stomp. Love the enthusiasm and giddiness of having a new masterpiece to play. A really cool version. Soulful.
Eyes Of The World
Sept. 26, 1973
War Memorial

The horns shouldn't work, but they sorta do. And Garcia skitters through around them like Norm Van Lier. OK - things get a little dodgy @8:00, and I'm reminded that I don't usually prefer the Dead with guests. Even David Murray, who can play these guys under the table, two chairs, and a dining room set. Didn't dig that. > Still, this one has some transcendent moments, especially after things really spread out @10:00. Someone must have tied up the horn section in a supply room in the back. > Ooops - spoke too soon. Back at 11:00. They probably slipped their cuffs and broke out. Sneaks. When they play chords, they sound wonderful. Improv, not so much.
Sitting on Top of the World

Great unusual Stratty Sittin' - great energy and aplomb. And pluck.
Sugaree
March 31, 1973
War Memorial

Kreutzmann in his glory. A couple of tape cuts make him/them seem even more super human than they already are, but the drums set everything up - including but not limited to a nice little launch pad for Garcia. Speaking of, when I hear this, I'm like, "you stopped playing the Strat why?"
Playin' In The Band
Sept. 9, 1972
Hollywood Palladium

Yuba Buena, this is delightful! Garcia opens the exploration, cards close to vest (read: wah closed position) then it blooms out. Everything you should expect from a Fall 72 Playin' and beyond - toodles!
