Energetic, serene AND Garcia's break is pure ragtime gold. In a good TJ, the guitar is a character. Here: a little insolent. Quality.

That spacious, unadorned June 1976 sound is so perfect for The Wheel. This one's dynamic and delivered with feeling. Cool show.

Oh man: LISTEN! Vocals are mixed a bit high, but this Cumberland has all the important "little" details. Notes the quotes. B'AM!!!!

1976: Your standard issue tipsy, warm-hearted TJ of the period. The guitar break is more conversation than guitar solo. Standard but special.

Spare, almost vulnerable take on this classic. Godchaux brings the church and Garcia brings the stained glass. An American beauty.

Estimated Prophet

You can almost take anything from this show and put it on a favorites list. Not surprising, then, that the Estimated is top shelf whiskey. And, to me, May 77 Estimateds are still the mightiest of the lot. The group levitates. And this one still has its own character. + Garcia's completely unleashed before and through the first instrumental break. Just unprecedented guitar playing. Really all the way through the song. Outro = lush heaven. No band sounds or sounded like this.

Super Swingin' Almost a garage band version. Out-of-phase Garcia rips it up.
The Other One

Palace Theater

I think pretty differently. Drop the needle anywhere in these two CT shows and it's thoughtful, silky, and action-packed. That's the Trinity. More or less.
The Other One

I'll say it again: Spring 77 Other Ones are their own creature. Personally, I love them - they reach out to the audience/listener. + This is almost an easy show to overlook b/c of its illustrious neighbors, but it's a giant. Garcia's descending little comment @ 5:25 is blue ribbon.

Love the Garcia cough @1:28, then a chuckle, then a sick guitar break. All in a day's work.
