ATOMIC! Garcia's subversive wah work only makes the area less safe for the public.

Searing version - groovy false start, then Garcia soars like an acrobat. Plug in!

CRUSH. Hard to believe they brought this intensity and dynamic precision all the time then, but they did! Ace!

Unknown Genre - iTunes. Kreutzmann drives this hovercraft - as he seems to in all of the great Berthas of this time. Look out for the guitars.

Have always loved the San Venetia tapes - almost like an x-ray of the GD. You can so hear the guitar architecture. So tempted to make that one word.

The Other One
Nov. 5, 1977
Community War Memorial Auditorium

A beautiful Other One in a classic show. Crisp, clean lines. Garcia wastes not a moment - gets right down to business. Intense for the whole song. Whenever I imagine that Fall 1977 is the Beginning of the Decline, this is one of the shows I pull up and go, Shut up brain! Having seen the Dead in this building several years later, I can only imagine how sweet this show was in person.

A revisit tells me that Kreutzmann's kick and snare carry much fancy water here. The whole creature just slides along. Things couldn't be running much smoother in the engine room. Think I can knock off a little on the early side tonight.
Terrapin Station

The Forum

Fab audience - a sizzlin' Terrapin that deserves more attention and care and feeding. This is about as good as it gets. Close anyway.

Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain

I actually think the verses in Fire are kind of meant to be flubbed. Not purposely, but I've never thought of it as anywhere near Hunter's best work. Literally forgettable lyrics. I don't put it on Garcia. Dig the song, but the lyrics play little role in it for me.
