Haunting materialization out of “Space,” nice playing from Jerry and Brent

Glacial tempo allows the inherent beauty of the song to come through, and allows Garcia greater flexibility in his leads.

Me and My Uncle

Broome County Arena

When the cowboy songs are this hot, you know you have a great show on your hands.
Mississippi Halfstep Uptown Toodeloo
Nov. 6, 1977
Broome County Arena

I prefer this version to the Mosque reading, and think this one should be higher, but also am thrilled that two concerts from my favorite year open with stellar readings of this great song.
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
June 24, 1970
Capitol Theatre

Concur with all of the above. Essential listening if you want to hear (and if you believe in) the idea that the band's style progressed—much of what comes later is bubbling over in this psychedelic cauldron. I also want to echo the context remark, and add that this version is better understood in the context of the massive second set (with its famous Dark Star) and best understood in the context of the full show: acoustic Dead, NRPS, electric Dead. Unreal concert, and the magic captured on the AUD tape elevates this version from noteworthy to transcendental.
Don't Ease Me In

This has been a go-to show for me for a while now, and I've just started checking out the acoustic first set. Wished I'd started sooner. Don't make that same mistake! The whole show is worth a spin.
