This is when I thought the show locked in.

Jerry's just on fire throughout this whole show. They jam the beginning for a while before the first verse at a nice, brisk clip.

Bit slower than the ones I usually groove on, but Jerry's bounce started off a very fine day for me.

Nice shuffle. Jerry and Donna's vocals on this sound great (how many times can you find that?)

Not the best ever, but the live premiere. Listen to the AUD to hear the crowd flip!

Not Fade Away
Dec. 29, 1977
Winterland Arena

Don't have the DP, but I think the AUD does this justice. Donna sounds incredible! The rest of the band is ... well, it's late '77, you know the rest. Highlights include stellar vocals all around, a roaring second solo from Garcia, and Keith treating the piano like a third drum set. Also, listen to the crowd just absolutely losing their shit throughout the whole performance, and then bringing it down with the band towards the end.
Dark Star
Dec. 5, 1971
Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden

I’ve only heard a few “Dark Stars” from 1971, but I’m going to need to change that quickly! There is some fascinating whole-band interplay at the beginning, and I went back to hear the transition into “MAMU” again. It really is as stellar as advertised. The transition back to “DS” is delicate and breathes towards the main theme without ever kissing it. A few minutes of Space are filled with more stellar band interplay, which disintegrates into the main theme. This is a must-hear version.

Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden

This remains one of my favorite openers. The band is tight and on top of things, and there are nice fills from Keith and Jerry between lines.

Nice version, good call.

I am an unabashed Jed-head, and this is the real deal. Nice peppy tempo, and Phil is swinging. Jerry craps on the vocals from time to time, but overall, this whole thing is an indomitable force of nature.
