All Along the Watchtower

Embarrassingly bad > from "Wheel," but full-on assault from the band that rages throughout otherwise.

Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
Nov. 1, 1979
Nassau Coliseum

This is weird-as-hell because the tempo is slower (so Brent can learn the chord changes?). Some of the '77-'78 "Scarlets" can be just a *touch too fast, and while Jerry can play over it, it takes them a few minutes to find the groove. But then they do, and if you like THAT part of the '77 "S>F"s, you will absolutely love this.

ALL that said, and it's definitely worth a listen, there is NO WAY this is higher than 05-17!

The direct transition is great. The band seems to lose momentum with the slower tempo than the surrounding nights, and you can hear Phil bomb into that bouncing octave "Fire" riff. He seems to ease off for a second, and you can hear Jerry egg him on into "Fire." That is a great version, and the direct transition is obviously something new in the month.

For what it's worth, I agree with the above two comments. I think this is the superior version.

It is simply unreal how consistently good the band and Garcia are this entire tour, and even more unreal that they could still go the extra mile for a version like this.
