They tend the song just exactly perfect. This is how it always should have been played - mid tempo and slinky, with heavy bass chords from Keith on the pie-anner. They kind of botched it up in '74, when they turned it into an up tempo dance number. For another one played like this, Dave's Picks 16 from 3/28/73.

This version is really much better than the number of votes would have you believe. If you like Let It Grow, you need to hear this one at high volume. Keith and Jerry. Wooo. And Bobby and Phil wow!! And Billy and the other guy Ba-bam!

Is this the Road Trips '77 version? If so, this is top 3 if not best post-hiatus Godchaux version. If not, I'll just move along now..... Also check out Dave's Picks 12 - quite a staggering version as well. Wow wow wow wow wow. Are we SURE this isn't better than DeKalb? Cause....I'm sorta thinking it could be.....

Help On The Way > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower
Feb. 26, 1977
Swing Auditorium

In my attempt to identify the bestime Help / Slip / Franklins, I compared the following on headphones, in the car, and on the home system, all at incredibly, incredibly loud volume: Cow Palace NYE '76 Swing Aud 2/26/77 Winterland 6/9/77 DP 3 5/22/77 Buffalo 5/9/77 4/23/77 4/29/77 Road Trips October '77 One From The Vault 30 Trips 1975 This version took it for the Slipknot! Jerry's guitar work is unparalleled - he's really up in the mix and playing tremendously. The rest are "just great" :-) No really, some great runner ups, but this one has a more intense fluid Jerry, quite difficult to imagine after those other things of beauty. Unfortunately, not in the Vault. Fortunately, I have a great sounboard. It's worthy of commercial release, so more fine people can experience it. I wouldn't say that it's the best Help or Franklins, but if I had to pick one, the Slipknot is so exceptionally good that it's worth it for that track alone, and Help / Franklins are certainly good enough.
