Close Encounters Jam

So, i just heard 1/22/78 / Dave's Picks 23 for the first time, as it was just released this week. And I have to say I was disappointed at how brief the Close Encounters lick was. Way shorter than the tuning before Bertha here on Dick's Picks 10. So...I guess my beef is that a huge deal was made about Close Encounters in the marketing of Dave's Picks 23: album cover UFO, hype sheet on the sales page for the CD, and the booklet liner notes talk it up quite a bit. I guess my point is that Dick's Picks 10 here has a better sampling of Close Encounters, yet no mention is made. There is a schism between marketing and reality.

I can't put it any better than Grendel, who may have dognapped my Black Lab. I could take another 20 minutes of Jerry noodling while Keith and Bobby hold down the main Dark Star theme. And Phil in there with the tremendous bass. I think the multi-track recording is at the center of this one's greatness, at least for me. I love being able to hear everyone in the band on this release. Yeah, the Other One is second only to DP 18, as far as post-hiatus versions go.

I love this one. It's in my top ten, probably because it was the first Dark Star I ever heard. Part II has a great improve melody that Jerry leads, and I've never heard them play it again. I'm not sure what the difference is between this one and a vote getter like 8/27/72. Probably an indication that I need to listen to more Dark Stars.

I believe the reason it is so high on the list is simple mathematics. There were not too many later era Dark Stars, and it may very well be the best of the 80s/90s era, so everyone that dug that era of the band is going to throw a vote this way. I know a few people who don't listen to much 60s/70s, but they know 80s/90s like the back of their hand; so for every one of those, this version is getting a vote, where none of the 60s/70s versions are also getting one. It's like the Maresells Wallace Eyes of the World, or whatever that guy's name is.

LISTEN TO THIS ONE. I had DP 18 for 15 years and somehow never noticed the searing guitar solo from Jerry. Unreal. There's something so unique to the DP 18 sound: the way the Wolf stands up in the mix; and the electric and acoustic pianos Keith's playing, also uniquely high. I would love to hear more shows from Feb '78. I wonder if the mixes and audio quality are the same? Oh shit, I entered this under the wrong date. Now I can't erase. Sorry guys, I'll give this one a listen.
