Dark Star
July 18, 1972
Rossevelt Stadium

Rides the pre-verse, always-becoming magic while taking every improvisational detour to smell the flowers and shake hands with the butterflies. Phil’s high-speed rubbery runs propel Jerry’s squealing ascension in the final drive, which is expertly punctuated by a pause, leaving the intro to shine full. A strong swig on the marrow of life. By the time we get to the full tiger screeching everything seems perfectly normal.
Truckin'
July 18, 1972
Rossevelt Stadium

Positively charged -- with both the drive of a great Truckin' and the hints of Dark Star peeking from the shadows.
Playin' In The Band

Strand Lyceum

This will reward its deserved attention; rack another on the pantheon of killer Playins.
Good Lovin'
May 25, 1972
Strand Lyceum

Yeah, this thing is up there. Simmering and laid back at points, perhaps -- yet this only emphasizes the rage, which is ablaze after the departure from the first set of lyrics.

Rheinhalle

Somewhere along there after MaMU, the collective thundering pulls you inside-out through some cosmic sock. As if you could even pay more attention. It seems you’ve already rejoined that evening in the halle (look, here’s the crumpled stub in my hand) via some twisted yet purely logical consciousness accelerator. Another show, another wild, intergalactic subway ride through the axis mundi to the universal Now. Something deep in the recesses of your psyche has “broke big as hell in Pittsburgh” and you’re positively groovin’ on the musical wave.
