Playin' In The Band
Nov. 23, 1978
Capital Centre

The band tries to catch Jerry and wolf as they’re seemingly on the loose. Traversing through snowy mountaintops. A wonderful journey.

Brent’s organ takes this to another level. I’m partial towards the Pigpen Version, but this shines in its own ways. Lovely phrasing from Jerry as well

Shocked to not see this here yet. Absolute scorcher from a really great show. Jerry’s tone cuts through like a scorching hot knife. Skin your wife.

Coming out of He's Gone. Billy goes ham, hitting the drums like a machine gun.

A mighty a primal drum section reminiscent of the early acid test days. Follows after a rare Cryptical and breaks through into The Other One.

Dark Star
June 24, 1973
Memorial Coliseum

Ancient dinosaur jams. An incredibly powerful and prehistoric 6/8 groove that’s the absolute synthesis of King Solomon’s. This takes you right back to the Triassic era. Evolution, and extinction, all cultivated into a primal wail that can be heard across the cosmos. Keith and Billy come crashing in like a meteorite, bringing forth Death, and dissolution. Mirrors shatter and molecules dissolve. A time forgotten by history, an ancient trauma too painful to remember. Seriously, what a Dark Star. Also Carrion, well said. You and your wonderful reviews make this site what it is.

Very surprised to see this with very few votes. Jerry on Organ for the first half and then they decide to take a deep dive into the cosmos, and everything suddenly becomes infinite. The boys really were in their prime, they could take these songs anywhere. Beautiful space jazz.

Where are my Dark Star heads at? I would love to hear your guy's favorite versions. Giving this one a spin and I'll be honest, my anxiety is a little rough today, and this did the trick. The Feelin Groovy>Tighten Up is real sound medicine. Filmore audiences were treated, a NYE show with Hendrix, then The Dead the next day. What a place to have been. This gets my vote for the sheer musicianship and how utterly endearing this music feels. Glorious and harmonious.

An introspective disco groove that feels massive in scale. The boys were on tonight, deeply listening to each and every move as they slowly and surely melt into the music, leading into some truly enlightening moments.
Around and Around

Boston Garden

Super cool version that flips you on your head once that classic Rock n Roll rhythm comes in and knocks your socks off. Eyes>The Wheel>Wharf Rat>Around and Around will be on repeat till time runs its course. The story tells itself.
