Sandwiched between Truckin’ and Eyes, this jam takes me to checkerboard floors and red curtains. Deserves its own place. Unique Jerry lines.

I adore any version of this tune. This one is particularly joyful and full of life.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

Bouncy as it is lysergic. Unique phrasing from Jerry. Everybody’s vocals are on. The Rider is some pure country fried jamming if I’ve ever heard it.

This is The Dead at peak performance level. Cataclysmic version. Everyone is ON. Explorative and not a beat missed. Easily top 5 of 69.

Nice early electric version. Always preferred this key for Dire Wolf compared to when they changed it in the later years. Just right. Nice version.

Bird Song
Aug. 22, 1972
Berkeley Community Theatre
Earthy version. I can feel tree roots entangle me that's how grounded this version feels to me. Has that undeniable magic that makes songs like Bird Song so special. This is a really natural flowing version that feels connected to the very core of our planet. It still amazes me how this gets overlooked by Veneta, but I digress. Stunning version.

Really just a hot version. Gets me moving!!
Midnight Hour

Family Dog at the Great Highway
Impossible not to groove to this one. I love the keyboard interplay here, and Pig squeals and screams his big ol heart out. Impossible not to have a smile on your face when hearing the absolute authority Pigpen had at the time. Psychedelic Jerry solo too.
Cold Rain and Snow

Awesome opener. Great energy with a incredibly solid groove. You can hear Mickey and Billy incredibly well on this as well. Phil actually steals the show for me as he really digs deep in the pocket and creates some really interesting rhythmic interplay between the rhythm devils. Do not neglect the 60s!
