Caution
March 12, 1966

Pigpen drives hard here, harmonica all the way. Early fireball, only giving us a glimpse of what Caution would turn into in only a year!

Really bluesy, love the Guild Starfire sound Jer had here. Flows into a groovy early Caution.

Jazz. Just plain jazz. Keith really shines together with Billy on this one, they carry you away in the nicest way. How the he** is this not listed?

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

Bill jazzes on throughout the transition, and the jam goes just a little bit furhter than before. Cool version with a laid back IKYR.

Not Fade Away
June 20, 1980
West High Auditorium
I liked this, a different but very cool NFA. Are there any other cool early Brent NFAs that stand out like this one?
Clementine
Jan. 26, 1969
Avalon Ballroom
I believe the riff he quotes is the bass line from "Greensleeves": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nK265pszTvA There is a "Coltrane and the Dead" post in the deadessays blog, it's definitely an interesting read. Glad you liked the Dark Star darkstar, haha!
Cryptical Envelopment
Sept. 23, 1972
Palace Theater
They should have kept it i feel, they could've taken it to another level with the jazz they would incorporate in '73-'74. A neat little nugget, from a good show.
Dark Star
Nov. 19, 1972
Hofheinz Pavilion
Overlooked, this is one of the most engaging Dark Stars of late '72, with Lesh quoting the Clementine riff from 1/26/1969 (it sounds familiar, Miles Davis maybe?) segueing into a proto-WRS interlude. Intricate and very comforting, a top shelf Dark Star.
Midnight Hour
Feb. 14, 1968
Carousel Ballroom
The out of tune guitar from Garcia is here is.. horrendous, to say the least.
