The Eleven
Feb. 24, 1968
Kings Beach Bowl

RAGING. 'nuff said. Goes into 'Drums', then 'Alligator', and can be found on 'Dick's Picks Vol. 22'.

Jahrhunderthalle

C'mon, this is SURELY the definitive version?! Pigpen is so strong yet so poignantly vulnerable in this cut, with perfect fills from Jerry and Bill.

Morning Dew
Aug. 24, 1968
Shrine Auditorium

Intense stuff; brisk but heartfelt. Real acid rock. The venue people cut off the power at the end, but 'til then, it's still 7 great minutes.

Turn On Your Love Light
Jan. 26, 1969
Avalon Ballroom

I know Deadheads try to prove themselves by choosing more obscure versions, but the 'Live/Dead' version is EASILY in the Top 5 'Love Lights' ever.

I've never heard Bob let loose like he does here. Wonderful stuff - takes an already rousing song to heavenly levels. He screams like a tortured angel.
He's Gone
Aug. 27, 1972
Old Renaissance Faire Grounds

I also agree - this is the definitive version! "Not too fast and not too slow" (different song, but the lyric applies...). This version is the Goldilocks of 'He's Gone' - although I do admit the 1981 Nassau Coliseum tribute to Bobby Sands is rather stirring.
Dancin' in the Streets
May 2, 1970
Harpur College

It's impossible to overstate the power of the central jam; I broke down halfway through. Following the song, I literally had to leave the house for a breather. Rather appropriately (true story!), I went for a walk in the morning dew - the song that follows this one in the Harpur College show.

Dear lord, someone get me some ice. This shit BURNS.

Raceway Park

Great backing from Donna Jean; soulful vocals from Jerry; simpatico accompaniment by Keith; crescendo ending; and THAT GUITAR SOLO. Stinger.
