Bill lays down possibly the tightest groove i've ever heard on this song, doesn't even need a flashy high energy solo to be a top tier version

Beautiful version of a song that normally doesn't really captivate me, especially great because Keith is high in the mix like he deserves to be

Super underrated version, as the song comes to a close Jerry is having none of it and does another insane solo

A few flubs at the start, but they make up for it by playing for their life afterwards, crazy intensity

^^ I had never listened to this version or 8/14 before, so I listened to 8/14 first, then this one and 8/14 again afterwards, have to hard disagree with you to be honest. Sure Jerry's playing is arguably better from a technical point of view in the 8/14 version but it doesn't really stand out to me amongst the many many other versions of Me & My Uncle I have listened to, while in the 8/06 version the entire band is playing super inspired, weaving all of their individual parts together to make the music sound like its an unfolding story. And although I agree this one probably gets a lot of praise because it is inside a sandwhich, the descending guitar line Jerry plays out of the crescendo they created to segue into it makes me want to listen to this version over 8/14 any day

I would write a long praise about this Me & My Uncle but I feel like I need to shower after that solo, absolutely disgusting. For the fans of other "how the fuck does he pull that sound out of a guitar" rips like this one, check out the Big Railroad from 3/31/1973, the man straight up takes your entire face away with the opening of the second solo

Bird Song is easily my favorite Grateful Dead track, I've played it probably a thousand times as a drummer and Veneta and 3/22/1973 have been my clear favorites for years, I think listening to this version has added a new one to the list. The audio has some issues but taking the matrix and EQing the hiss out leaves a surprisingly clean recording, and oh man is it one worth listening to. Veneta was always my favorite because it was so perfectly executed but parts of this one honestly make Veneta sound sloppy, just listen to the interplay between Bill and the rest of the instruments in the first 2 minutes, the way Bill weaves in countermelodies with the ride cymbal and toms to what the rest of the band is playing is out of this world. Late 72 was an amazing period for Bird Song and this version can easily hang out with the best of them, which makes the iffy audio quality and splices even more depressing. If anyone finds a good quality source of this I will give you my kidney

Phil certainly is "on" something but it doesn't benefit his playing haha, it's still a good Eyes but I expected way more based on the fact that this one came right after 11/11 which is my favorite, and 11/17 right after also being an all time version. It just feels like Phil is super spaced out, he plays some interesting licks now and then but in between those licks he seems lost, they kick into the second jam with clear intentions to take it somewhere, but despite Bill and Jerry constantly trying to push the jam Phil stays in the background until the band shrugs and stops trying. Not sure why he even decided to take a "bass solo" after that tbh, after 4 bars it just completely derails and despite Bill's creative attempt to pull it together by adjusting the groove, Phil just sort of stops trying halfway through and even completely stops playing for a while(?). Ah well, good reminder that they are still human and can have their off days, and even now I'm mostly just nitpicking about "what could have been" based on the ridiculously high bar they have set
