Not Knickerbocker Arena but Compton Terrace. Blazing version, huge passion and a rollicking vibe!

Mississippi Halfstep Uptown Toodeloo
Sept. 3, 1980
Civic Center

A sprightly "Mississippi" to open the set - Brent's keys give it the lift it needs to make a powerful opening statement - much poppier than 70s versions, for sure, but to the benefit of the song in my opinion - and the band is playing & listening beautifully throughout. An underappreciated version!

Big River

Arrowhead Stadium

The Dead in pure country mode. A rare treat - as straight-ahead a version as you'll find, and then a solo that could melt glass.
Me and My Uncle
July 1, 1978
Arrowhead Stadium

the pick-up disco beat on this is just wild stuff -- 1978 has its own special magic and there's so much in evidence here.

Usually not much on the reggae treatment of "Friend" -- sometimes it just sounds too shiny, sometimes the band doesn't have the discipline to pull it off...reggae is deceptively hard to play. But they lock right in here, listening hard to each other and staying out of each other's way -- a whole lot of space, generous sprinklings of magic. And that piano solo! Almost baroque in its focus. A wonderful version
