Not Knickerbocker Arena but Compton Terrace. Blazing version, huge passion and a rollicking vibe!

Tennessee Jed
July 1, 1978
Arrowhead Stadium
Making the most of the passing chords in this one - fantastic playing, great energy - Bobby's guitar really cutting in heavy in the chorus just before the solo...which brings a whole new energy to the tune, a real tonal shift. Heady!
To Lay Me Down
July 29, 1974
Capitol Center
Coming out of "El Paso" and easing into one of the mellowest, finest grooves you'll find anywhere. Basswork gorgeous, keys ghostly. The solo starts out great but isn't all-time...but this version should be heard, its character is special.

Jerry singing it like he'd kinda like to give the tune a rest but then rips into an absolutely skull-peeling solo midway through
Scarlet Begonias
July 29, 1974
Capitol Center
Agree. This one has a caffeinated kick to it that really pops - I love the '77 ones, too, the stretchy-loose-liquid ones...but this one feels so true to the reggae roots, all that sweet syncopation. Guitar tones on this one all in that sweet sweet '74 pocket. Superb.
Black Throated Wind
July 29, 1974
Capitol Center
The groove right out of the gate is so smooth, focused, right in the pocket - this is country-rock Dead at its best, stands next to '73 work in that dirty cosmic western pocket. It's the little things that count in this one - the piano and the guitar in conversation like wind in the leaves - deeply inspiring version
