Deal
Oct. 18, 1972
Fox Theater

have to disagree on the way "deal" ages -- the early 70s versions are true to its honky-tonk country origins; over the years it gets put through a lot of paces, but the early "deal"s can find a very solid pocket, in that special cosmic country place. this is a good'n!
Brown Eyed Women
Oct. 27, 1979
Cape Cod Coliseum

You'll have to look in a lot of places to find a more affecting vocal from Jerry than the one he gives here - his voice in the set is sometimes up, sometimes down, but he's right inside the lyric here. And it shows in his soloing, too - just blazing. The band's exploring the opening post-77 space that's not fully emerged yet, and it works like a beauty on this tune, bringing a focus to it that makes it feel like a great pop tune at times. The bass is especially great on this version that has several very rich layers.
Jack Straw

A little rough on the opening but then locks into a groove and doesn't let go. The crowd really responds as the band digs deeper into the groove. Great soloing throughout, tremendous vibe.
Turn On Your Love Light
Jan. 23, 1970
Honolulu Civic Auditorium

This show is very special and this "Lovelight" really shows how - there's no extended rap, it doesn't aim for the freakout...it's in a very deep pocket, starts out tight and deepens over the course of half an hour. Mellow in a very resonant sense, this is a "Lovelight" for the Lovelight skeptic -- hard not to like absolutely everything going on here. The organ sound toward the end, especially - maybe it was an especially sweet rental? It absolutely hits the spot.
The Other One
Jan. 23, 1970
Honolulu Civic Auditorium

Opening section so clean and formal here, the contrast to the depths it reaches by the 10-minute mark is intense. Heavy & heady echoes of '69
