Often a throwaway, this super bouncy version from a top 10 show sparkles.

Playin' In The Band
Dec. 28, 1979
Oakland Auditorium

Spectacular version, just gorgeous interplay in the second half...it is Type II but pretty and focused in a way that early "out" versions generally aren't (even if they're fun). Brent is really making the most of his kosmische keys. This is also one of the few times I've heard that the second phase double-drummer set-up feels just as essential as the first phase (when stuff like "Alligator" and "Caution" really *required* these kinetic, complementing drums). Heady!!

For people who can take or leave Dead vocals, this is a treat. To be honest, the only time I really appreciate their singing is 1) songs Jerry wrote that are actually in his range the entire way through and when he was in peak health, 2) anytime Weir is getting really into it and screaming like Henry Rollins, or 3) anything Brent sings because, while he wasn't the most brilliant instrumentalist, he is for sure the best all-around musician to ever play with the Dead (and it seems like only the keyboardists ever really had serious vocal chops: Hornsby, Welnick, and Pig would be close seconds ... none of them is a Jerry on the keys, but they can all consistently carry a tune and hold their own on the ivories). Also, can I somehow upvote the phrase "Heady persian vocal flubs"? Dying laughing at that.

Hot version. They should have rotated this one in more often in place of some of the less-compelling blues standards.

This is often a throwaway tune, but Weir is FEELING IT on this one -- sounds like Ian MacKaye or something. His and Garcia's guitar on the matrix version are also just so perfect in timbre.
Terrapin Station

Yep, for very later-era Dead, this loose and jazzy Terrapin with Jerry basically all there behind the mic is a treat. The preceding Playin isn't an all-timer but the jam is nice
