The MAMU>O1 segue is a jaw dropper, and the opening moments of O1 pulse with that same confidence. This gives way to several minutes of quiet conversations between Jerry and Keith (for the most part) that eventually gathers the rest of the bands attention in several swirling waves. Neither are very prominent in the mix, but the combination of Keith's keys and Pig's organ add a layer of intrigue to the directions this song can be pulled.

Lot to love here, but this is always the Caution I reach for when I want to listen to Pig get down with his Harmonica badself. There's a couple of minutes there where he not only keeps up with the band, he's driving.

The next half hour you have scheduled with your headphones, try to absorb this beautiful little monster. This isn't the 'standard' fall 71 saloon infused exploration, this is the prototype for those Europe 72 'bus ride through insanity' variations....made all the more amazing by acknowledging that this is only Keith's 2nd stab at performing the song live. Most October thru December 71 versions tend towards a pattern that would have fit in fairly well in August of 1971 - there's the new layer of Keith, but it's still the Grateful Dead Saloon (and a fine saloon it is) - but this little beasty is the seed of 1972 mind melters to come.

no problem man - always good to be a waypoint between somebody and their grail ;^) I always figured there were a couple of things against this one for release - the Viola had already been put out on Philzone, and Warner would probably be cranky about the band releasing a recording on another label.....of one of their label's recordings being played. All that said, this is gloriously twisted, and it's good that it's still out there....somewhere.
