Wharf Rat

Greek Theater

Honored to be the one to submit this one even if I'm shocked it's not here. This is an outstanding version. Brent is spectacular here on all fronts.

Sugar Magnolia
March 23, 1981
Rainbow Theatre

Out of "Stella" comes a thrashy, supercharged, cocaine infused "Sugar Magnolia" that's just delightful.

The Other One
Sept. 26, 1991
Boston Garden

The Magnificent Seven lineup of 1991 strike again with this trippy little concoction. Flows beautifully into verse 2 of "Dark Star."

Space
Oct. 31, 1991
Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

Ferocious beam banging. Disembodied Vader voices. Frightening, unhinged "Space." Leads perfectly back into "Dark Star."

Friend of the Devil
Dec. 5, 1981
Market Square Arena

Outstanding version with beautiful keyboard work from Brent. Can't believe this one hadn't been posted yet.

Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
Sept. 4, 1991
Richfield Coliseum

I'm going to throw some more praise at this version; this one excites like few others. That this one is languishing with 15 votes while 9/13/93 and 3/23/95 have 40+ is obscene. Jerry plays three different solos and they all roar. This one is up there with the absolute best of them.
Eyes Of The World
Oct. 17, 1994
Madison Square Garden

I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but this version is just long; it's mostly just some competent noodling. There's no moment where the band hit a good groove or Jerry let loose on guitar that made me smile and go, 'wow, they're bringing it right now.' I will say that Jerry's vocals are exceptionally clear for the period, but that's it.
Turn On Your Love Light
June 16, 1985
Greek Theater

This version is excellent. Very fast and inspired.
The Same Thing
May 27, 1993
Cal Expo

Definitely the best post-12/28/91 bustout, but agreed that it's nowhere near in the same league.
The Same Thing
Dec. 28, 1991
Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Stadium

Just wanted to throw some sugar on this one; this is in the Top 5 best individual song performances post-Brent. It's dark, spooky, and has the perfect vibe. The second set pre-Drums for this show has such a fantastic flow to it.
