An argument can certainly be made for some of the other May '77 versions (5/28, 5/19), but to me this has the most inspired solo. 5/28 is longer, 5/19 is a little bit more delicate and patient. This version has the slow, majestic build in the second jam and then HUGE fireworks in the solo! Some of Jerry's playing here almost sounds like he is playing banjo instead of guitar. I would play this for anyone who ever questions Jerry's abilities.

After listening to so many of these, I can still see why some people consider this the best. The best things about this version are the very high audio quality, strong vocals, and the transition between the segments is so smooth and patient. The Scarlet solo is par for the time period, and a few steps below 5/21, 5/13, and 2/5/78, which absolutely crush it. Jerry’s vocals are perfect in this version, as is the transition between segments, which is the smoothest, most seamless one I know of. Try to identify where it changes songs, you can’t. The solos are very clean and free of wah/mutron effects compared to other versions. Also, Jerry’s solos tend to flutter and float above the groove on this version, which is also different from other versions. The best Jerry moment is the final Fire solo, with a tremendous buildup that gets me every time. If you want to get crushed by the opening Scarlet solo, listen to 5/21, if you want to hear a more interesting and groovy jam, listen to 2/5/78. But this version is still fantastic for the very patient, seamless, and beautiful waves that comprise the middle transition.
