Not Fade Away
May 11, 1978
Springfield Civic Center Arena

Like most everything else from this show, this one is raucous and passionate, like all great NFAs.

Althea

Rosemont Horizon

The space in the final solo is indeed getting hot.

Lively version, Jerry was clearly engaged and having fun, even if his chops weren't at 100%. Love the enthusiastic vocals at the end.

The Other One

Laguna Seca Raceway

Firey, trippy version that leads into a strong Wharf Rat. The vocal effects Bobby used on this tune in '87 sometimes sound hokey, but they work here.

Wharf Rat

Intense, focused version with lots of Phil bombs. Coming out of a strong The Other One. A combo that could sometime be a post-space snooze delivers.

Kind of a slow, rough version. Jerry doesn't exactly nail the landing on the "inspiration, move me brightly" lyric. Can't upvote this one.

These early Altheas can be so slooooow. I hate to say it but this Althea actually bogs down a great first set.
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
Dec. 3, 1979
Uptown Theatre

This is a really nice version. Scarlet is super high energy and Fire is great in a slow simmer kind of way. It doesn't hit the peaks that some fires do but it's mesmerizing nonetheless.
Feel Like A Stranger

Deer Creek Music Center

Wow, don't sleep on this one. Rythmic and propulsive, and while Jerry's chops are not in stellar shape, he's dialed in and his playing is an interesting and fully engaging exercise in musical pointillism. Very good stuff!
Man Smart, Woman Smarter

Civic Arena

Interesting that they played this and its twin, Iko Iko, in the same show. This lively MSWS is more stretched out than the first set Iko, and comes in the middle of a great pre-drums Shakedown> MSWS> Foolish Heart sequence.
