Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
Dec. 31, 1978
Winterland Arena

Tremendous sound, very competently played with a loose party-type vibe, but the more I hear it the less impressed I am with it. It just doesn't peak anywhere like the great versions do. To my ears, the transition jam is aimless. Don't hate it by any means, but I'll look elsewhere more times than not.
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
July 3, 1978
St. Paul Civic Center Arena

Agreed that this might be a hair better than 7/7/78, which is pretty good on it's own merits. Jerry is in total command on this one, both vocally (save for the requisite 2nd Fire verse fuckup) and on guitar (notice its him, not Phil, that leads the transition into Fire). Weir's slide is again a bit much, but it doesnt detract from Jerry, who is not to be denied here. Maybe slightly behind some of the giant 78 versions, but not too far.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Outro is lyrical yet blistering. Top-notch version.
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
March 22, 1990
Copps Coliseum

Great for the era, no doubt, but I feel like the actual entrance into Fire is the main selling point here. The transition jam in its entirety is fine but hardly a revelation to my ears. This is tight and quite in sync, and I will turn to this on occasion when I'm enjoying the late-period Brent era. Preference is toward the huge versions in the '79-'84 range though.

Obviously this is a great version. I can understand feeling that its overrated, but it's still very high quality. Won't get an upvote because it shouldn't be lapping the field though.
