Mississippi Halfstep Uptown Toodeloo
Nov. 18, 1972
Hofheinz Pavilion

A Homo erectus-like version but notable for Jerry's solo after the first Rio Grandee chorus.

The definition of brevity. Sweet stuff!!!

Awesome early version. Jerry has a great solo at the end.

Sports Arena

Jerry impassioned yet subdued singing in that ragged and worn voice is deeply affecting.

Jerry's voice and singing at this time fit this one perfectly.

Sure, some of those 'Feelin' Groovy' jams in the segues of '73-'74 are good, but most are a momentum/buzz kill, if not just downright cheesy and lame. I know plenty of folks hold the 'Feelin Groovy' jam in high regard--and there are certainly some that I like, whether it be certain '69/'70 Dark Stars (although the 'Tighten Up' is superior, right?) or '73/'74 CCS>IKYRs (like 6/16/74, but even then...). Still, though, I love most of these CCS>IKYRs despite the 'FG' jam, as it more often than not seems to clip a hot Jerry solo without enough musical payoff. In short: blasphemy! There are discussions of this elsewhere out there in Barlow's cyberspace, so please, let's discuss... Anyway, this version: imagine that 'FG' jam getting in the way of Jerry's laidback, fireside-like but somehow on-the-edge-of-your-seat and still all the while ear-to-ear-grinnin' transition solo? Me? I'd rather accidentally eat a strip of some shitty, speedy 'cid. Regardless, this needs some votes! Oh yeah, I sure as hell ain't hatin' with any of this, just trying to add the wrinkle of my perspective. If you disagree, spread the love for the 'FG'!!! (But...that Alpine Valley version from '82? Now that hint of the 'FG' just about brings a tear to my eye! What a deep band!)

Heard it on the Tapers's Section, too. Jerry is like a Fury trapped in a bottle playing in those changes!

Not even my mom would care, but this is one of my top three versions of '73-- easy.

Big D was off on the pre-birth part of her maternity leave. I love Bob's ferocious strumming on the big 'Let it Grow' jam. I wonder if the vault's SBD version also suffers from a cut...

Welcome aboard! I'll have to go check this version out again. '74 was definitely a good year for Cumbies.
