The Wheel
Oct. 2, 1977
Paramount Theatre

It's so apt that The Wheel would roll into Truckin' that the outro is short but the rest is very nice.

Jerry really mines the changes on this one and pulls out plenty of little gold nuggets (like Coltrane). Good interplay, too. An inspired version.

A cheesy video of this kickass version would have Garcia playing atop a steam locomotive as it barrels down the track.

Incomplete, but what remains is top-notch and essential.

I just gotta nominate this one, that's all.

Wharf Rat
Nov. 21, 1973
Denver Coliseum

The ‘El Paso’ is the mayo and this ‘Rat’ is the meat of this great PITB sandwich. Very well executed, with a cool outro. Incidentally, when did Donna first help out with vocals on the ‘I’ll get up and fly away’ portion?

A very nice sandwich. The PITB segments are all very good and full of interest. The ‘El Paso’ and ‘Wharf Rat’ contained herein are each good ones, particularly the ‘Wharf Rat’. The final ‘Playin’’ segment has a ‘Tiger Jam’ just before the reprise.

Phil and Bill lock in early and set this one up nicely. Is it a mellow intensity or an intense mellowness that pervades this one? Anyway, who cares? its good.

Noice (nice + noise), indeed!

Limber and loose-limbed, this one is. May be the hottest from Fall '73.
