Bird Song

Boston Garden

Wooden and crunchy. Nice interplay between Jerry and Phil. Vince blows little zephyrs.

So Many Roads

So much Dead to soothe my soul, and this is some of it. Tight.

China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Aug. 26, 1971
Gaelic Park

When the going gets weird, Weir sings the headlight part.

Eyes Of The World
Oct. 11, 1977
Lloyd Noble Center - University of Oklahoma

This one doesn't have the shimmering lyricism of, say, 5/22/77, but the logic of Jerry's phrasing is a hoot.

The Other One
Aug. 20, 1972
San Jose Civic Auditorium

Needs to be on the map. Features a jam that seems to be based on Skydog's 'Little Martha' and a nice 'Tiger Jam', but that's not all...

Thompson Arena - Dartmouth College

I've always thought this was special for Jerry's unique (hell, did he ever play it like this anywhere else?) take on the 'Bertha' chords, although I wouldn't say it's better than the standard chords. Nevertheless, unique and good = heady. Needs more votes so that more folks might check it out.

I ain't heard no better version from '72.
Playin' In The Band
Aug. 27, 1972
Old Renaissance Faire Grounds

Undeniably great but it's number of votes would suggest that it's far and away the best and I guess it is, but only because it's been great the most times for the most people. But therein lies its statistical blindside: many of the other fantastic versions have just been heard less and by even fewer people, and each has its own little story for why this is so.
