NFA as a Jerry tune? Yup, here it is! "But you drive me back -- huh!" Hell yes!

Overlooked GEM! Swift yet deeply felt. Jerry CRUSHES it.

So Many Roads
Sept. 28, 1993
Boston Garden

^^^ Amen to that! I'm all about the emotion. The end of 1993/09/28 sends shivers down my spine every time. It's always seemed so totally and perfectly soul-baring to my ears. But it's been my favorite SMR since the moment I first got my hands on the tapes a month or two after the show, which was *very* nearly my first show, so it's deeply imprinted on my heart.

^^^ I just don't get the love for the SMR from 1994/10/01. It's a good version, but only good. Compared to 1993/09/28, it's sloppy and unfocused. I just listened to it again yesterday, hoping to hear it differently, to hear what everyone else seems to hear, but still it eludes me. Clearly, this is a personal problem of mine, one not widely shared.

Late-late-era Dead at its finest. I've come to appreciate the way that Vince would sometimes, especially in the last couple years, fall way back, do very little, thereby opening up lots of harmonic and rhythmic space that the keys had been dominating for years, since Brent started really going for it with the synths. I think this contributed to Mickey moving more toward "percussion" than "drum set" playing. Throw in Branford, and it's a potent mix -- mellow, but potent.
Samba In The Rain
March 30, 1995
The Omni

Somehow (too much weed?), I found myself comparing versions of Samba In the Rain. It's very 2020. Anyway... after listening to quite a lot of several versions of this song, I *do* think that there's something special about this one, which they (Dave?) picked for the "Ready or Not" pseudo-album. It's not just tolerable, it's even good during Jerry's solo. Good! Samba, in 1995?! Crazy, I know.

This version is indeed tasty as hell. Slays 1995/07/09 easily, as well as the overhyped 1994/10/01. It may even, just maybe, rival my personal favorite, 1993/09/28 (which should be ranked WAY higher here!). The two versions are similar, which isn't surprising given that they were played only a month apart. The big question, it seems to me, is which Big Ending one prefers. 08/25 is rawer, more ragged (while still being right). 9/28 is more perfectly passionate.
