China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Oct. 20, 1974
Winterland Arena

Agreed, Jerry's guitar work on the transition alone makes this one of the greatest. A smooth mellow flawless China cat and perfect rider coupled with that transition.
Not Fade Away
July 17, 1989
Alpine Valley Music Theatre

Like most Not Fade Aways, Mickey Hart is an absolute beast. He hits the drums so hard. It was a gift to us and in sure its partly why his wrist are shot and he uses soft drum sticks now. animated Jerry on fire all night.
Deal
July 19, 1989
Alpine Valley Music Theatre

Deal was a great song from 1972 and on with some great early 80's. Why was it so prolific in 1989? Certainly Jerry could of played like that other years. I know songs progressed over the years but it's so unique the way it just exploded in 1989. It's an amazing performance. I use this one for my non deadhead friends so they can see how amazing Jerry's solos could be in a more rocknroll way that they can relate to. Donnie, we all know about the great Jerry band versions. This site rates Grateful Dead versions.
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
June 18, 1983
Saratoga Performing Arts Center

I love that breezy tropical sound Brent makes in the intro to Scarlet. The perfect kickoff to a beautiful monster. As Phil once said early/mid 80's dead was six soloist. He may be right but this one works. Would love to see a video of Mickey and Billy during Scarlet.
Morning Dew
May 2, 1970
Harpur College

What is it about NY and Morning Dew? I've read quotes from Jerry where he said New Yorkers want you to go for the kill or something to that effect. Jerry definitely played that way in NY. Morning Dew is a big time song anytime it's played and no doubt Jerry knows that and recognizes an opportunity. That's six NY Dews in the top 20
