Uncle John's Band

Oxford Plains Speedway
Solid jam into Terrapin. Jerry rips during the 7/4 jams

The Other One

Family Dog at the Great Highway
Free Jazz at its finest. Reminds me of "Little Stuff" by Miles Davis, which came out earlier that year. The Dead are master scholars of the psych realm. +20 if I could.
Not Fade Away
Feb. 14, 1970
Fillmore East
Favorite NFA by far. Raw psychedelic dance hall vibes. Jerry's phrasing is ominous and thoughtful. The jam starting at 4:15 knocked my socks off- possibly my favorite Jerry lick of all time. Can't see how anyone would prefer Cornell over this unless they didn't know '70 NFA's existed
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Dec. 10, 1973
Charlotte Coliseum
Bobby's really having fun with that catchy little riff at 3:25. Heady experimentation.
Eyes Of The World
Dec. 10, 1973
Charlotte Coliseum
Unbelievable. Keith and Phil particularly nail it. Phil keeps bombing straight into Brokedown.
Playin' In The Band
Oct. 19, 1973
Oklahoma City Fairgrounds Arena
A wave of intergalactic space goo. Bobby's whammy bar work at 11:50 was crazy heady. Jerry's short hits here are eerily similar to the organ hits in "Chameleon" by Herbie Hancock, which was recorded just a month earlier. Total jazz fusion.
