Tripel, I agree, this ain't #1 - but it's a fantasy that the band was best in the 80s, at any point. I've heard the band (Weir in particular) say they were best in the 80s, but that doesn't make it true. The proof is in the pudding, and there's just no way they were as good as they were in the 70s. Pure fantasy. Mick says the Stones are as good now as ever. Also fantasy - it's just older rockers trying to feel good about being past their prime. The Dead had a lot of good night's in the 80s, but every night was a good night until roughly May '78. DrJerome, I can't even hear Donna on this - how could she be horrific?

Danny dread - couldn't agree more - Keith is such an integral part of their sound that it's almost silly to think they let him go without a fight, but hey, that's what happened when Jerry addled his brain with too much drugs. Sad that he ruined a great thing. I love him, but it's tough love. They all should have gotten sober and taken some time off. The only mistake nearly as bad was taking Mikey Hart back. I guess Jerry wanted a straight forward rock band.

I was here, 1st Dead show. Other than the 3 big ones from In The Dark, I knew no Grateful. I bought Crimson White & Indigo when it came out, but have not listened since. Not really able to get into the post-Godchaux Dead too much. I may listen today after reading an article on the lyrical meaning. I can't imagine this version being better than some of the '73 versions (3/28 & 4/2). We shall see.... Edit - no doubt, it is strong with The Force. Phil sounds exceptional. Better chorus vocals from Weir & Garcia than I expected. I listened to the YouTube version and could not really hear Brent (good thing). I'll take your guys word for it that this is the best post-Godchaux version. I don't know about best ever; they have some darn good ones from '73.
