It's really difficult comparing post hiatus to pre. They're two different bands really. I believe the solo here makes it THE quintessential post hiatus version.

Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
May 13, 1977
Auditorium Theatre

This version would be perfect if the Scarlet was longer. But as pointed out, there is a transition problem into Fire, and I would guess the two are related. As is, I highly recommend the listen. Jerry's guitar work on Scarlet is clear and loud, really one of a kind mix for 77 - well two of a kind - Dicks Picks 29 is also a gifted mix. This may not ever be your desert island choice, but it may long be your favorite first 5 minutes of Scarlet Begonias.
The Music Never Stopped
April 24, 1978
Horton Field House - Illinois State University

Gentlemen, I have to tell you - it was because of your comments about this version in 2014 that I became a full fledged Dead Head. Prior to reading these comments, I was content with about 20 Dead shows. This version of Music Never Stopped was so talked up that I spent around 50 bucks for Dave's Picks 7 on eBay. It was so good, the spacey section from around 3:30 to 5:30. From then on, I started buying up the backlog of Dave's Picks on eBay, and I became a subscriber to get the future picks at retail cost. But I became addicted to new releases and spent thousands on box sets and Dave's Picks and Road Trips that had long ago sold out. Thanks for the inspiration. No Regrets.
Franklin's Tower
May 15, 1980
Nassau Coliseum

Well well well (everydays), this is my virgin version. Actually, I saw them do it live for the last time in Albany '95, but I can't say I remember it. I will forever hear the Tower riff in my head at the end of Jack Straw. I prefer 70s Dead, but I love this version. For a long time I sang "roll away with you". Jerry plays some killer leads on this one. I also like the guitar heavy rendering. In the 70s versions, Keith held down the main Tower riff on the pianer while Jerry played fills and solos, and Bobby was busy not being audible in the mix, probably because his rig absolutely sucked in the 70s post hiatus. But not here. My boy Bobby is on it loud and clear, and this 11 minute monster rocks. I can't backspace for some reason and wanted to modify my comment about Bobby's rig. It's just that his guitar sounds very thin (not sure what amp, but I think that's an Ibenez he's playing on the Winter land video). Back before the 74 hiatus he played that kicks loud rich Gibson (I forget the model, bUT it looks like. A hollow body)
