Playin' In The Band

Great version here. This Dec 73 run is my absolute favorite GD lineup - same as mid 72 through October 74, but without Donna. I can dig her sometimes, but other times her “contributions” to a song like Playin’ In The Band can be quite jarring and downright painful.

I also think this is better than the big 77 versions. Mostly because Billy was better off without Mickey and Keith’s playing was a lot more interesting during this period compared to 77. And Jer licks are surperb, as always.

Man, this one gets me every time! Jerry’s tone on this show (and the whole tour for that matter) is just fantastic. I can’t get enough of Jer on that Nash strat.

I've gown to prefer the pre-hiatus versions of this song to the monster 77 versions. Like many other songs, it mostly comes down to the drums. They were just a better band with one drummer. Billy was way more dynamic on his own. And Keith's playing was still inventive and beautiful at this point. I actually don't think there are any pre-hiatus songs that I think were improved post-hiatus.

Maybe the best show they ever played. Love this Dark Star. Super jazzy and melodic without ever getting boring. And the transition to Cumberland is epic!
