They Love Each Other

This is a CRAZY, trippy version! Jerry is INCREDIBLE on this one...so much so that some of the band loses it's place and somehow makes it work.

Particularly smoking version, everyone is firing on all cylinders, Bobby's vocal is great, Brent is fantastic, Jerry, Bob, Phil, etc...

Well....the guitars are out of tune a bit so that's a demerit! Bobby's voice is low in the mix for the first couple of verses, that's strike two! But it has two cool things surrounding it. One is the banter Jerry has with a New York fan who yells out "Dark Star" (pronounced "Dawk Staw!"), right before they go into BIODTL. The other cool thing is the firecracker pop that goes off just as the song ends. And the general "New Yawk" energy that is palpable throughout this whole show.
Morning Dew

Hands down the greatest "Morning Dew", the DEFINITIVE "Morning Dew", and most definitely better than Barton Hall. I just expected to see this one as number one. The "Europe '72" of "Truckin'" -> "Morning Dew" (omitting "Other One") is definitive live Dead. You can play the Europe '72 "Morning Dew" for a non-deadhead, for ANYONE, and they will get it. I've done it a million times, to so-called "Dead Haters", I slip this one on, and inevitably they ask "Who IS this? This is good!". Ha! NEVER fails! ("New Potato Caboose", Anthem of the Sun version, is another one that does it. ) Anyways, in review: The Europe '72 version - THIS version - is the definitive "Morning Dew". The story about this version in the new documentary only clinches it, as far as I'm concerned. This version can go toe-to-toe with ANY great live recording in rock history, be it "Young Man Blues" or "Mountain Jam".

I can't believe this doesnt have more votes! Best ever? I don't know, but it's definitely the most MEANINGFUL version of "The Other One". They dedicate it to the spirit of Neal Cassidy who they'd just found out had died. The spirit is upon them on this one, the band plays with fire and purpose, and they nail everything, including the back up vocals, this is THE prototype. Best of all: no "Drums"! Goes into a great version of "New Potato Caboose" as well. Absolutely should be higher, although I will concede: there are LOTS of "Other Ones" to choose from!

Bird Song
March 29, 1990
Nassau Coliseum

One of the highlights of my life to have witnessed this; an absolute special moment in all of music. Before this song, there would have been NOTHING to suggest to Branford that this was where the band was heading. They opened with "Jack Straw", "We Can Run", etc. It's like we all knew we were ALL (band and audience) turning Branford on to the Dead experience. Branford, in turn, soared and taught the audience a thing or two about how special of a musican HE was....seeing Jerry beam at Branford, and Branford playing at Jerry.......goosebumps. Then he comes out and plays the whole second set. And then they whip out "Dark Star". What a night, what a frickin night. And what a version. If this isn't THE greatest version of "Bird Song" (and I agree that Veneta '72 is the gold standard), then this is certainly the most special and historic version. Deserves to be in the top three.
