He's Gone

Activity Center - University of Colorado

Nice, nice, gentle version. This song works best that way, for some reason. Also, Brent does a nice job here.

Very well done boys! I agree, it does reach out and up and slides into that gorgeous jam-space organically, effortlessly.
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

Boston Garden

Was taking a break from the Dead between last show I saw in '72 and next one in '77 - I thought the crowds were too big!! Now, I am sorry, because among other things I missed this awfully nice version, which takes off well above the crowds - and clouds! BW playing his ass off on CC and Jerry spot on. Just nice.
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
May 8, 1977
Barton Hall - Cornell University

What a great thread - hope it goes on forever. This is a transcendent version of a transcendent, life-changing song (Scarlet) and a mesmerizing, jammed out, latter day North African-European chant (Fire). There are "better" individual parts in other S>F versions, but this one is surely one of the top entire sequences. Hell, I can't tell, really, but this sends me, for sure. As to heroin and Jerry - I agree it may not be the sole reason his voice changed, but I think it affected the way he heard things. And that made a huge difference - he fell back in the mix, his tone became thinner, as if he were gradually disappearing. Fits and starts, but the trend is unmistakeable. Saddest thing ever.
